Halloween Movie Blog #24 Parasite Eve

Have you ever played a game that you said to yourself "What about the source material?" Well that is what you get with the 1997 movie parasite eve. This movie is the one that inspired three very good survival horror games...well two good ones.
Toshiaki Nagashima is a biologist who is doing major research on mitochondria. When his beautiful young wife is tragically involved in a car accident which leaves her brain dead, in desperation he steals her liver from her body in order to recieve the mitochondria from it to resurrect his wife from the dead. The killer mitochondria takes the form of his assistant who then uses the biologist for the host of a terrifying new species that is threatening to take over the world.

The doctor from this movie is the one that follows up in the game. It was a nice little japanese horror film that gives you good background in the game. I am not really that impressed by the CG effects or the "scares" but one can feel that the writing in this game is sound.
The setup for this story and then the follow up as the main character goes to the united states. I would suggest that you check it out.

Halloween Gaming Blog #24 Parasite Eve 1 & 2

Hello all and welcome to the next of my Halloween Gamer blog. This time I am doing a double feature to work off of movie and feature. In this case we have two games that spin right off from a movie. So Lets Dive into Parasite Eve.
Parasite eve stars Aya a detective deciding to go and check out her favorite singer at the opera. Unfortunately this is where things go to hell. The opera catches fire and the singer turns into an evil psychic monster. Aya develops powers herself and utilizes them to try and keep "Eve" from destroying all of humanity.
This game was very impressive visually with great cut scenes that they intertwined within the game. This game also was very creative with the parasite monsters making plays off of creatures that have surcomed to the evil mitocondria. This was a creative play off of the movie which we will cover in the other blog. You don't see much from the first movie other than a little bit of the story and the scientist that helps you along.
The Combat in this game was very cool in an action style venue operated mode. This works well and is easy to grasp for rpg veterans and newbies alike. The weapons are very customisable making your weapon and powered abilities fun to level up. This game really revolutionized the field but it was kind of a dead end.
We decided to dead end the old game style and bring things together in a new way. The second game in the installment is quite different from the first. Aya is investigating strange occurrences and stumbles on a workshop that is utilizing the same process that created eve to create monsters of their own.
This game is a total departure from the original game it is graphically superior and decides to go for more of an action style interaction that makes it similar to a real survival horror type game. We get rid of the menu and more to the action. This makes it much more dangerous for players that are not quick to react.
This is a good second entry into the series. There is also a third game but that one is a brainless actoin PSP game so don't bother with it.
In the end this is a scary game series well worth finding and checking out.

Halloween Gaming Blog #23 Maniac Mansion

Hello and welcome to the next of my game blogs. I am covering a game that launched an underground revolution as well as a fun underrated TV show. Maniac Mansion.
This game follows the events of a meteor crashing near a creepy mansion. The crazies inside end up capturing a young girl and her friends have to come for her. You must face the scares in the mansion as well as its odd designs to rescue the girl from the evil meteor.
This was a really cool game for PC and NES allowing you to point and click your way through the oddities puzzles and craziness of the story. The way that they wrote this gives you many ways to interact and to win the game. You have a number of character choices and combinations that leave the replay value quite high.
The other fun part of this game is the size. This game was very large in relation to the time most games would take. This mansion was well built and fun to navigate. Weather you are playing ding dong ditch or microwaving a hamster this is a great classic still available for download.

Halloween Movie Blog #23 Child's Play Part 3

Hello we are back yet again with the last part of the chucky franchise. In a land where movie remakes are everywhere this time we are doing a Sequel decades after the release of the original film. I bring you Curse of Chucky.
We start this story with a mother and daughter living together in a home. The daughter has lost the ability to use her legs due to an accident and her daughter is babying her terribly. One day they get a gift of a chucky doll and the mother mysteriously dies. Now her sister has swooped in and she is out for money. During this time the chucky doll goes wild and the killing begins...
Ok you know I don't really have a lot of confidence in horror remakes or really late sequels but this one is a true exception. I really loved this film it was well thought out the timing was great and the effects were suitably creepy. I was even enjoying the acting that this film is on.
This film really brings back the feel of the first film. Chucky still quips but it is kept to a minimum and the film sets up the kills in a way that builds the tension with a great level of success. The movement from the shadows. The subtle build up from the doll moving only a little at first and then going all out. The last thing is that it connects to the rest of the series quite well.

Halloween Gaming Blog #22 Clock Tower

Well here we are back again with the next halloween blog. This time I am covering a truly nasty horror game Clock Tower. This game follows a young girl and the mystery behind the series of murders and a mansion. You must be careful because a dangerous killer with a nasty pair of scissors is after you.
Ok This game is old school and had a few sequels that were pretty lame overall. This one through is a pretty awesome one. It originally came out for the snes and was ported to the original playstation. This game had a lot of cool functions allowing you to explore a scary place and discover a lot of shocking instances of foul play. This game has a lot of elements that make a point and click adventure fun.
This scissor man is a crazy malevolent killer that will instakill you if he catches you. You have to run and hide when he appears adding to the level of fear and anxiety that you feel while playing this. The instant killing adds to the excitement but t can also add to the frustration.
If you have a chance make sure you check this classic out.

Halloween Movie Blog #22 Child's Play Part 2

Well this blog shows where things stop getting scary and just start getting silly. Seed of Chucky follows a chucky fan girl and her efforts to revive the crazy doll. She ends up trapped herself in a female version of the dolls. They work together to slaughter their way to the top and Chucky continues to work towards getting a body of his own.
Ok this is officially when the series takes a turn to something else... This became less of a horror series and more of a comedy series much like the Leprechaun series. There were no scares here just a lot of killing and quipping. The new character is fun but at the same time this really changed the series for the worse I think.

Ok here we go again...Chucky and Cynthia are back and this time they want a baby...for him to poop on! Well actually Chucky still wants to be reborn and this time they are  finding the perfect baby to do it with. Will the happy family kill their way into your hearts?
If we couldn't make a serious horror last time we can do a much better job of messing it up here. Really this is a joke and is more of a parody of a chucky movie than the first 3 films. This film really plays off of the comedy angle a bit too much which is probably why this was the last of the original film set.

Halloween Movie Blog #21 The Child's Play Series Part 1

Ok All welcome to the next in my halloween movie editions. I know that I've done the weird and obscure but now I am going for the heavy hitters! This time we are starting with a franchise that made the scary doll franchise...Child's play. I am going to divide this into three blogs with the first three films, the next two crazy films and the new one that came out recently. They all belong grouped together for a reason.
This film is the first in the series. It follows the exploits of a killer with satanic roots who is fatally injured by the police chasing him. He manages to place his soul into the body of a Good Guy doll (the my buddy doll of the day). This doll ends up in the hands of Andy a nice young boy. Unfortunately the doll has plans for Andy which involves taking over his body and living again.
I felt it would be good to improve the reference from which Chucky sprang. This movie was by far the creepiest of the series. Throughout the film you are on the edge of your seat worried when the doll would strike really amping up the action. The biggest issue is that all the fear leaves you as soon as the darn doll speaks. I'm sorry I just can't take it seriously at this point.
Chucky is back from the dead thanks to a freak accident. This is just in time to make it for the Good Guy positive vibes campaign. Chucky is back and this time he wants to finish the job he started with Andy and take his soul. Andy is now orphaned thanks to the last film and once again finds himself in the fight of his life against the evil chucky.
This film didn't throw all the horror elements to the wind. We still have Chucky quipping but we haven't totally lost the horror element with a few jump scares. This movie still has the roots that make it a solid installment in the franchise.
In the third installment the Good Guys are back in production and the murderers soul is back and it is in yet another doll. This time Chucky is purely out for revenge and he will send our Hero through a world of pain in a fun house of horrors.
This is the last film of its kind for multiple decades. This film again has the same major issues with Chucky and his one liners making it less serious yet you do still get the horror elements and the evil fun house atmosphere has the type of fun that people could see in the saw franchise.
This trio has a very individualistic feel to it as you have the scary elements and no where near the comedy of the other films. Chucky is a cool character idea adding a little levity and a little horror making this into something quite different from most horror series.
