DVD Movie Review #90: The Big Bang Theory Season 2

Hello again and we are back with yet another in my line of reviews. This time I am reviewing the second season of Big Bang Theory. I had been wanting to see this series for a long time and ended up buying it in a nice little 5 season block. I really enjoy this series and have a hard time stopping once I start.

This season we get to look more into the relationship between Penny and or group of favorite geeks. We get to see some interesting rivalries and even relationships. Of course we get to enjoy our regular antics and even get to see a famous person or two.

This season has the same fun as the first season but I feel now they are past a slightly bumpy start and it has been smooth sailing throughout the season. I feel the cast interaction in a series such as this really does make the series run well. As this series goes on I have to disagree with the whole idea that the series makes fun of nerds. I feel that most of the characters (minus Sheldon) are very good and enjoyable. The series is quite addictive and I find myself running though it at light speed.

Well this series does have a few mild annoyances such as Sheldon. He's a character that makes the series yet he annoys the heck out of you. I actually do feel otherwise that this series doesn't have a large downside.

In the end give this series a try it is a great one.

DVD Movie Review #89 Shadow People

Hello again I am back to bring you a new review from the vast vault that is my movie collection. As per the rules I have recently watched this and it is in my collection. this movie I watched on netflix originally and was interested but decided not to do much. I bought a movie from Wetmovie1 in a set of films that interested me for a good price. This was a cheap blue ray and I am interested in it for my collection.

This stars a night radio host who is running his dead time radio show until he gets an unusual caller who reports seeing shadows and eventually killing himself. This evolves into a mystery/horror/documentary linking to a sleep study in the 1950s with bazaar finding or two to look into.

I thought this was pretty imaginative it felt one part horror and one part documentary. This film had a suitable creepiness to it with realistic effects and some nice scares. The music is ok for this and the color scheme is drab yet works very well for this film.

I cannot really say that I loved this film. There are parts that are a bit of a yawn fest and this does give me pause. I am also not impressed with the acting as it doesn't feel believable somehow. In the end while I think that the style of mixed documentary/horror is creative it also is quite confusing.

In the end this is a creative horror but nothing to write home about if you get it cheap pick it up and enjoy.

Rating:   6/10

I have the Blue Ray Version and it has some nice features it is worth looking at if you want this film.

DVD Movie Review #88 Gingerdead Man Vs. Evil Bong

Hello again and welcome to another one of my grand old movie reviews. Today we go to a soon to be classic film Gingerdead Man vs. Evil Bong. Oddly enough I found this off of WetMovie1's site as he had gone to a theatrical showing and reviewed it. I had to get it as I have enjoyed the Gingerdead Man movies and the Evil Bong Movies. And I obtained my copy for $0.57.

This movie continues the story from Evil Bong 3 where we are back to the Bong shop where our favorite bong is hidden away. The Gingerdead man has decided to go after the girl and the bakery that did him in so many times before. Well the two cross paths and then they decide to go at it in a strange way that I have yet to fully understand.

Well this has what we all loved from the first series including wisecracking puppets and of course the lovely naked bodies writhing about. It is good to see the same old characters back again as I have enjoyed both the series quite well.

Well that was all that was good about this film.....oh the disappointment! I mean was there even a fight?! The ending also left me going what the heck?! Though I enjoyed the characters but there wasn't much coherence to the plot and at times I had to wonder what was going on. The Music was ugh terrible. You were given one job and it wasn't a hard one! People!

I am saddened and terribly disappointed in this.

Rating:   4/10

I have the standard DVD release of this film by Full Moon entertainment.

DVD Movie review #87 Scorched

Hello again I hope that you are all well and we are back again for another wonderful Movie review. Today I am writing about the Movie Scorched with John Cleese and Woody Harrelson. I saw this movie with the grand as it was purchased by a friend at the Dollar Tree. I have been jealous as I haven't been able to find it there since. I did finally find it and the Grand in a buy one get one sale at Moviestop and got it for $1.50 used. This was worth it and makes me want to collect al of Woody's movies.

This movie follows a group of people working at the Desert bank. All is not well under the calm exterior as there are some seriously disgruntled employees. Add in three different bank heists several revenge plots and a useless guy looking for a job and you have our movie.

I really enjoyed this film when I watched it originally. The characters are fun and the story is very entertaining. I felt that the plot was had a subtle complexity that made it worth being a fan of. I also felt that the character interactions with the different mini plots with the mixing will be worth while. The desert climate and the different settings like the mansion and the desert tent were neat locations for the shoot. The acting was not bad though not academy award winning.

The music in this was waaaay too loud. I would be enjoying the movie then have my ears blasted off then when they started to talk again I'd have to pump the volume up to hear them. They needed better sound mixing in this area. As far as other detractors I thought this was plain and simple and didn't have too much major taking away in the end.

I feel this is a nice comedic piece and definitely worth seeing as a hidden gem.

Rating:  7/10

The version I have is the 2004 dvd release which is the cheaper of the two known releases.

DVD Movie Review #86 Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Black Rose Saga

Hello all and welcome to my next step in the DVD movie review corners. Today I discuss the second part of the Revolutionary Girl Utena series called the Black Rose Saga. This set came like the other cool limited edition box sets that had this series. I of course need to see this through as Revolutionary Girl Utena is considered one of the great animes and now I have only one part and the movie left.

This story line takes place right after the duel with the president of the student counsel and Utena's vitory. In his grief over the loss the President sinks into despair and isolation so his sister must take the place as student counsel president. Meanwhile the Black Rose society makes an appearance bent on killing the Rose Bride and putting a frail young man in her place. They corrupt the hearts of those close to the duelists and have them steal the duelist power to try and take out Utena.

This story line is rather cool I must admit. I like the Black Rose society and the extra depth that they give to the characters that are corrupted. Many of these characters had been to the side for most of the series and they are now given a chance to shine. The Rose Bride's mysterious older brother is introduced and he is also a rather deep character with an unknown connection to Utena's Prince. The Music is much the same as the earlier series and is still as fun this time around. The art is also nothing new but still suits the series.

I am a little disappointed with the laziness in the battle scenes. They have fairly deep dialogue but they have almost identical moves each time. Its pretty much watching the same fight over and over again. This gets boring. I also am saddened by the disappearance of the Greek chorus shadows and the replacement by a single shadow girl that doesn't really do a good job of anything other than some strange aside that has nothing to do with the overall story.

I feel this could have been done better but still it is worth watching.

Rating:  7/10

DVD Movie Review #85 Winter Garden: Di Gi Charat

Hello again and welcome to yet another reviewer's look into the fantastic and surprisingly lovely world of entertainment. Today I am giving the run down on Winter Garden which is a supposed finale to the Di Gi Charat Nyo series. I was lured by the idea of it and that fact I like the original series and had to get hold of this.

This story follows the two heroes of the original series as they have grown up and have moved on. They have discarded their dreams and decided to live out a normal life hoping to eventually take over the family business of running an Inn. (I admit I never got to finish Di Gi Charat Nyo as it never came out fully in the USA but I don't remember this Inn business). Dejiko has gone from being a loud mouthed obnoxious smart ass to a shy, polite and slightly ditzy young woman. She has found love but could she be in store for the ultimate let down?

I though this was an imaginative take on the series. I really never could have seen this coming. The writing was good and I was pulled into the story without issue. The animation was well done and the music was easy to listen to making it enjoyable. The subtle appearance of some of the characters did give me some interest and the series overall is fairly nice.

If you are a fan of the original series you will be disappointed in this. The main character must have been hit on the head or something as she is nothing like the character we all know and love. The series is also nothing like what you have been expecting. The story is somewhat frustrating ending on without full resolution. In the end I do not know where this story came from.

Had this story been a stand alone I would rate this higher. If you are not familiar with the series and like a fairly decent love story this could be the series for you.

Rating:  6/10

I got sentai's initial release but I don't feel this will be re-released so this would be the version to get.

DVD Movie Review #84 Herculese in New York

Hello again yet again we are back for another fine movie review. This time we do Hercules in New York. This is Arnold's first movie and it comes to be known as a historically bad film. I saw this for $2.99 and said "what the heck" I had to see this film.

This movie is about Hercules who decides he's tired of his father's rules and wants to mouth off and live on earth for a while. His father says no and he decides to go out anyway. He goes around picking fights and doing what he wants eventually hooking up with this scrawny little pretzel vendor forming a strange friendship and earning money off of his ubre muscles. Some of the other gods don't care much for Hercules going around and having a good time and Zeus ain't too happy about it either so they decide to throw a bit of crap into the gears.

I actually liked the music in this series it kind of reminded me of some off Woody Allen comedies. The characters were interesting and I have to admit is was very nice when you see Arnold back when he was called Arnold Sang and had no knowledge about acting (not that he improved much).

You may have noticed that the positives were very short. Well the negatives are not quite as short. Well lets start with the acting if it can indeed be called that. I am reminded of most Woody Allen comedies in this but a lot of the satire is lost when it isn't satire. This is just poor halting acting nothing more nothing less. The costume design is pretty poor it looks like they took bed sheets and a needle for pretty poor work. The story is kind of sad and overused in regards to this character. I must wonder if there was any effort at all to this.

In the end this and pumping iron got Arnold his role as Conan and started things rolling. This is worth a watch but don't expect much even for an Arnold movie.
