DVD Movie Review #121 Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves

Hello all and welcome back to the next in my series of DVD movie reviews. This time I am reviewing the third movie in the Honey, We shrunk or blew up something franchise...and no I'm not talking about mythbusters. This time we are going with Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves. This movie is the only one in the series that I didn't see. My girlfriend wanted to watch dance moms and well I needed something short to fill the time so I went here.

This movie follows along with our hero now the president of his own invention company. He is working with his brother now and is on the ropes with his wife and neglected children. He absent minded promised his wife that he would watch the kids with his brother while his wife and his sister in law went on vacation. I don't know why they didn't want to take the kids or all go together but what can you do the story needs a hook. Unfortunately the parents end up shrinking themselves and have to endure tiny hardships in order to try and get things together necessary to grow back to normal size once again. Can the kids be trusted?

Well this film isn't too bad as it does have the neat effect of the shark car roller coaster ride. It is also fun to see Rick Moranis in action as I really enjoyed his acting and am saddened with his disappearance from the movie scene. The music is appropriate for the movie and the effects are pretty decent for what you are getting.

This movie was a sad squeezing out of the franchise so that they could milk it for all its worth. This really doesn't have the umph of the first two movies and this makes it a tad sad. The acting was fairly wooden and I feel that Rick Moranis was phoning it in. The effects were good enough but not really up to snuff this time around with obvious low quality CG effects thrown in (of course they were pretty good back then). In the end this just felt like a forced attempt.

A kind of disappointing end to the series but if you haven't seen it I'm sure its worth at least one watch.

Rating: 6/10

SeptumSin's Blue Ray & DVD update Blog 5/13/14

Hello and welcome to another acquisition blog. I am excited about a potential future purchase that I am watching on ebay at this very moment and hope to by the end of the month have a wonderful addition to my collection. This of course is not what has started this off. I have had one new addition and will start there and move on from that point so I hope that this one will be packed full of fun for you all.
The Dead 5/10/14: This is a movie I got at Target as we were looking for something scary to watch. When My girlfriend and I in to find a copy of Clash of the Titans (not the good one) we saw this for $5 at Target and decided to get it. I have heard it is a very good Zombie film. I will be watching this tonight and very much look forward to it.

The Quiet Man 5/11/14: This is a movie that I saw at Costco and said "wow only $11". This is one that I need as it is an Oscar winner John Wayne is way underrepresented in my collection. I am curious about this one and look forward to watching it and seeing what this is about.
The Grapes of Wrath 5/11/14: This is an excellent film and getting this on blue ray it is also a wonderful opportunity. Not only is this an Oscar winning film this is a well worth seeing Oscar winning film. This was seen in a two pack with the next in the line for $12. This was too good an opportunity to pass up. I look forward to see the conversion.

The Hustler 5/11/14: This is a movie that was on the list for me to see for a long time now. When I got the opportunity to pick it up packaged with The Grapes of Wrath for $12 then I could not resist.
Sailor Moon 5/13/14: This is part of a dream for me to work on finally weeding out all the Chinese bootleg anime in my collection. I did not think that it was possible because Sailor Moon did have most of it released here in the united states but it was a limited release and Toei has no intent of ever re-releasing it here again even though Funimation has repeatedly made attempts. I found this as a set at ebay for next to nothing in relation to the individual prices and was amazed to be the winning bidder. This makes it so that right not in my collection the only Chinese bootleg anime I have in my collection are for those shows or seasons (as the last season was never released here) that have no current United States releases. Of course due to my luck now that I have bought these like with Cardcaptors there will finally be the re-release I had been waiting for. This is Season one or "Sailor Moon" in Japan This is released by ADV in their attempt to follow Pioneer's botched attempt at releasing the series but of course ADV went under and Toei never again renewed the rights so this went out of print fast.
Sailor Moon R 5/13/14: This was the second and last season that ADV released uncut. This is only done in the sub but is the original uncut format of the series I am pretty happy about all of it finally working its way with such a really nice dvd set. You know I plan on trying to keep the Chinese copies of season one and two as I would like to preserve the horrible dub job that Pioneer did with the series that probably left Toei with a bad taste in their mouths anyway.
Sailor Moon S 5/13/14: Sailor moon S is the third in the series. Pioneer released an uncut version with the terrible dub they did and the uncut japanese sub. This was in the single disc format as there was a release later on by ADV of the box set. As Pioneer went under early this was their flag ship title an it is near impossible to get today.
Sailor Moon SuperS 5/13/14: Well this is the last season that was released by Pioneer for Sailor moon which is sad as the last season was by far the best. This one of course is supposed to be uncut as well as contain the dubs.

Salor Moon Movies 5/13/14: The three movies that got released in america have also been hard to get going from around $30-50 each and if you buy the set it is around $75-$200. I am glad that I got this and completed the series release here in the United States. This is a wonderful testimate to my collection.

DVD Movie Review #120 X-Files Season 2

Hello again and welcome to a new DVD movie review. This time I am reviewing X-Files season 2. This was a gift along with the rest of the series from a friend for Christmas so I is continued bed time viewing with my girlfriend. This is a fun series and worth having in any collection and I am glad to work on Season 2.

Season 2 picks up not long after Scully was abducted by Aliens. We also get to start seeing some of the other terms of success with the X-Files being restored and ending with a very crazy cliffhanger. This series amps up the suspense with new ideas.

This time around the effects are much better than before and it shows. The acting has also had an upgrade so it only helps events. I feel that the writing team has done a better job doing much less of an issue than it was last season with repeats or at least better at hiding them. The Music level is the same but still enjoyable.

I do feel that the writing is still the series weak point. Some of the stories either drag or are to hard to look at such as the bug story. Some of the stories continue to be repeated but as I stated above their skill level has been able to mask it better.

In the end this is a good series and I shall continue.

Rating:  7/10

As before this is the price of the full set I got including the movies.

DVD Movie Review #119 Big Bang Theory Season Six

Hello and welcome to another of my find DVD movie reviews. This time I am going over Big Bang Theory Season Six. I am surprised to see myself at the end of this road and nearly caught up to the current release through it is well into season seven right now. I love this series and am a confessed addict. I cannot wait till the next release.

Well we are back again and Howard has returned from space more experienced and more haughty than ever. We get to see more development in the relationships that have formed for all three couples (yes including sheldon). We even get to see a slight relationship building for Raj and a pretty intense series finale that will have you coming back for more.

This season was relatively good really involving the relationships and how the different characters have evolved. This evolution has really hit home for me as a staring point of the series. I feel that in many the characters just rely on the same old gags to get laughs. I do feel that this series is well worth continued viewing giving us new material to return to each time as well as great acting and fun music.

Well any series starts to get a little old. This one has a few things that kind of wear on you such as Sheldon's antics. He does evolve and his involvement with Bob Newhart was fun at the end of the season yet at the same time I feel that there needs to be more development in this area.

DVD Movie Review #118 Golgo 13: Queen Bee

Well back again with another wonderful DVD movie review. This time I am reviewing an anime Classic Golgo 13: Queen Bee. This is the sequel to the original animated series Golgo 13: The professional. I got hold of the animated series and discovered it was not the original. I went on a hunt and found the other two quite cheap. This one is the only one that I got used and therefore became my watching priority.

Well Golgo 13 is the code name for a famous assassin who always completes his job. This time he was hired to take out a Guerrilla warrior woman who has designs on killing off the candidate for vice president. Of course all is not as it seems on the surface as a more sinister plot finds its way into the mix.

This is actually a pretty good series and look forward to watching more of it later. The animation is smooth and colorful. I feel that it also a well oiled 80s to 90s series. The characters have surprising depth and the story keeps you on the edge of your seat for the whole time. The dub was pretty well done and is standard fair for the time. I feel this is well rounded overall.

I have to wonder about this...the music is quite dated. I also have to wonder a bit how a woman who has sex all the time manages to maintain a wonderful body and yet having had around 15 kids without it effecting her? Yeah that's not realistic...

In the end though it was a well dont series.

SeptumSin's Blue Ray & DVD update Blog 5/2/14

Hello again. It has actually been a long time since my last review. I thought for a while I wouldn't have evne been updating now if it wasn't for a faithful trip to Costco with a bit of discount Oscar madness!
Amityville 3-D 4/29/14: I got this one from Amazon.com on an impulse buy. I have the first two and the fourth movie and decided that this would be the best time to complete the series. I am not really too excited other than with pleasing my OCD nature :)
Evita 5/2/14: This is the first of my Costco buys. I am an Oscarfile and hope to one day own all Oscar Winning Films in my collection I really wish I could say I am mostly done but they just keep adding new ones each year (you'd think they'd take a break and let me catch up). Any case this is probably the best start to me getting my collection finished as this was one not on my list if not for the $10 price tag.

The Jazz Singer 5/2/14: Again a classic and a winner of the first Honorary Oscar this film is quite important. It was a different time back then but good acting and singing is beyond time. In the end I am happy that this is in my collection and hope that the blue ray cleans it up.
Meet Me in St. Louis 5/2/14: Another Honorary Oscar winner for child acting. I have to say that this is an award we need today. It like the Jazz Singer comes in these nice books and as they were both reasonably priced (not $35) I had to get this at the reduced Costco price. I really love these and hope to eventually get Amadeus in this format.
Rebecca 5/2/14: I really like Alfred Hitchcock and this film was sadly missing from my collector's sets. I got this in a two pack for $12 with Spellbound. This is something that is very much worth the buy as it is one of Hitchcocks few Oscar winning films. I cannot wait to see how they cleaned this one up.
Spellbound 5/2/14: I mean this is the next in high art that I got at Costco it will be very sad when I get to the next one. This was a deal that I couldn't refuse again with the cast and the Oscar win plus add Alfred Hitchcock this was a no brainer for me.
The Wolverine 5/2/14: This last one really is sadly the odd man out and also the one that started me buying. I mean a recent release on Blue Ray for $10? I am a marvel collector or really a super hero movie collection. Who knows I may even get Catwoman these days (I am not even willing to look it up). This movie I really look forward to seeing I only hope that Machete 2 gets out soon.

DVD Movie Review #117 Freakshow

Hello again It is time for another of my patent pending DVD reviews :) This time I am reviewing the Movie Freakshow. I saw this it said "wow banned in 43 countries I've got to see this". It was also $1.50 at the movie stop bought on the buy one get one sale. Of course now I have watched it can maybe see why this was banned which is to say in the shadow of Browning's "Freaks" for the actors involved.

This movie follows a traveling carnival full up with freaks. A group of traveling criminals gets hired by the carnival as laborers. They decide that they are going to steal the supposedly vast amounts of money that the carnival makes and the female will seduce marry and then kill off the carnival master to inherit his massive fortune.

Well this has got to be an...interesting movie. I will admit they kept the gore to a minimum saving most of it for the end and making the movie majority about the story. The use of actual "freaks" is also an up side and of course the down side that left it to be banned...well that and the scene at the end. It was otherwise pretty creepy overall.

Well this has a lot more fault than it does good. The movie was boring with the long action-less exposition. The time line is a bit off as it appears to take place in the 30s or 40s but has the same slang as per current day. The action at the end is sadly tasteless and makes me cringe worse than it did in Hostel...mater of fact hostel was better. Now why they singled out one of the people over all the others also is hard for me. Sad to say I was hoping for better.
