DVD Movie Review #103 Puella Magi Madoka Magica Movie 1 & 2

Hello again and I am back with yet another fine review for those of you with the most refined of tastes. This movie has been on my list for a very long time but as ANIPLEX of America decides to be total Dicks and put out a limited release amount in america and then on top of that charge an arm and a leg I had to get this set for around $70 and this is sadly not a bad deal. The set comes with both movies and as they both go together I will review them both at once here.

These movies are a summary of the anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica. It revolves around a girl named Madoka and her friend as they attend high school they encounter a strange creature being chased by a magic girl. The girls soon learn that there are witches in their midst preying on humanity and only magic girls can stop them. The girls soon find out that being a magic girl isn't all that they bargained for having a sinister secret that they all must face.

This is a beautiful set of films. They run together well as pretty much one long viewing lasting roughly 240 minutes. As the TV series it is summarizing is only 300 minutes long it does a great job of catching everything without leaving anything important out. I actually feel that they cut out the waste in some areas. The quality of the animation and the colors are a wonderful treat for the eyes the combination of animation and style make for a unique venture into the anime world. The plot is wonderfully deep and for those that are familiar with the magic girl thing it is well worth the viewing as it adds even more depth and perspective. The music is beautifully composed leaving you to a treat for all the senses. The Voice acting is also well done for those of you who love the screechy Japanese.

Well to start the Japanese track is the only option here which can be annoying an grating even though it is well performed. The movies are not really anything new if you have seen the series. This is kind of sad as it does really feel like they took the series and just cut it together without anything new or exiting added in.

In reality if you are not a die hard collector like me you can either get this or the series. Actually as the series is a bigger financial investment and the third movie is going to connect to the first two I would recommend to most to just get this set and have an easier time of it.

Rating: 8/10

Note this is harder to get even Rightstuf doesn't have it anymore so happy hunting.
